The basis of any discount laminate flooring is high-density fibreboard or HDF. It is a high density, moisture resistant fibre based panel made from wood residues from wood processing factories. This residue is ground into a pulp and mixed with a melamine-urea-formaldehyde resin then pressed into panels. The upper surface of discount laminate flooring is a photograph of the wood that it represents covered by an extremely hard and wear resistant layer of transparent melamine resin. This type of flooring can be installed over just about any hard surface (such as concrete, linoleum, hardwood or tile) but not over a carpet. It should always be installed over the top of an underlay made of foam or rubber. This acts as both an insulation layer and has the effect of reducing noise levels.
